How to Jumpstart

A dead battery doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end of the fun in your Jeep near Woodbridge if you have a pair of jumper cables and a little bit of know-how. Whether it’s from leaving the lights on in your vehicle or cold weather, batteries do die occasionally.

You can always have the service experts at Safford of Springfield check your battery out when you bring it in for routine maintenance, but you need to be prepared in case something happens on the road. You can follow these simple steps to jumpstart your car next time your battery dies.

Simple Steps to Jumpstarting Your Car

  1. The first thing you need is another vehicle with a good battery pulled nose to nose with your car. This is best done away from a busy road if possible. Make sure your disabled car is visible and have each vehicle’s parking brakes on.
  2. Next, you have to locate the battery terminals and determine which ones are positive and negative. A “+” symbol or red color indicates a positive terminal and a “-” symbol or black color indicates a negative terminal.
  3. The jumper cables are marked in a similar fashion with red and black colors to make it easy to connect them. The first thing you need to do is hook the positive cable from the working car battery to the positive terminal on the dead battery.
  4. The next thing you do is hook up the negative cable to the terminal on the good battery. You must be careful because these cables are now live and can shock someone if you aren’t careful.
  5. Hook the remaining negative cable to any metal section under the hood that doesn’t have moving parts. Once this is done you should make sure everyone is clear and have the person start up the vehicle with the good battery. Let it run for a few minutes before trying to start your Jeep.

It may take more than one try depending on the age of the battery, but that’s all there is to jumpstarting your vehicle. If it doesn’t work, you can always bring your vehicle in for Jeep service near Woodbridge. For more information on battery maintenance, give us a call today at 844-339-7774.
