If you live in Springfield, Virginia, you probably know about a lot of our nation’s history. After all, this area was at the heart of it all when the country was just forming. But did you know that George Washington actually owned a distillery here? That’s right. In fact, in 1799, the distillery produced over 11,000 gallons of whiskey. That means it was one of the largest distilleries in the United States during that time. While it may not pump out that much whiskey now, George Washington’s Distillery has been reconstructed and now produces small-batch spirits for you to enjoy. Whether you just want to pick up some whiskey or want to take a tour, as well, you need to check this place out.

Plan a Trip

If you want to plan a trip to George Washington’s Distillery, you should make sure to do that relatively soon. That’s because you can only tour the distillery from April until October. It’s right in the middle of the season now, so you don’t want to wait any longer if you want to see it. Tickets are reasonably priced, with a normal adult ticket coming in at $18 if you buy online. Kids from ages 6 to 11 can get in for only $11, and kids under 5 get in for free. Are you 62 years of age or older? If so, you can get a $1 discount, meaning that you can get in for only $17. Remember that these prices are less expensive than what you would pay at the door, so plan ahead and pay in advance.

What Else to See

The distillery is going to be amazing, but there are plenty of other sites to see as long as you’re in the area. You can visit George Washington’s mansion or wander through the grounds and gardens. You should also stop by the museum, the tombs, and the pioneer farm. Going to all these amazing locations will help you get a better sense of where George Washington came from and how he became the person we know him as today.
