Jeep JL HardTop Removal

When you remove the freedom panels or hardtop on your Jeep Wrangler JL, you can easily be enjoying that fresh air in no time, just how a Jeep is supposed to be driven down the road from the Shenandoah Valley to the D.C. Metro Area!

What you will need:

  • T-50 Torx Head bit (provided in Jeep tool kit)
  • Ratchet (provided in Jeep tool kit)
  • An extra person to help

Step 1: Remove the freedom panels. There are six L-shaped locks and two levers that need to be unhooked in order to do this. Fold the sun visors down and unhook the latches located beneath them. Then, turn the remaining six L-shaped locks to the open position to unlock the freedom panels.

Step 2: The two freedom panels are now completely unlocked and can be removed. Remove the driver’s side panel first, followed by the passenger’s side. Make sure to store your panels in a safe location to prevent any damage.

* * * If you only want the freedom panels off, you are all set to drive the car as is, or you can take the rest of the roof off for an added sense of adventure.

Step 3:Disconnect the wiring harness and windshield washer fluid located in the trunk on the driver’s side. To disconnect the wiring harness, push the red tab down, then push in on the red tab while removing the wire. To disconnect the windshield washer fluid, push the button located on the chord while removing the wire. Place the wiring harness and windshield washer fluid wire in their associated storage places located just below where they were plugged in.

Step 4: Use the T50 Torx bit to remove the six bolts located under the rear glass of the hardtop. There are three bolts located on the driver’s side, and three bolts located on the passenger’s side. These bolts can be stored in the rear storage compartment labeled “Roof.”

Step 5: Use the T50 Torx bit to remove the bolts holding the top of the hardtop in place. There is one bolt on the driver’s side B-pillar, and one on the passenger’s side B-pillar. These bolts can also be stored in the rear storage compartment labeled “Roof.”

Step 6: Grab a buddy and remove the hardtop! It may be easier to remove if the rear window is open, as it is easier to lift the roof over the spare tire. Make sure to store it in a safe place to avoid damage.

Installing Your Wrangler's Hard Top

Step 7: With the help of a friend, walk the hardtop back onto the Wrangler. It may be easier to do this if the rear window is up, as it makes it easier to avoid getting the roof stuck on the spare tire. Be sure to align the front of the hardtop with the B-pillar bolts to ensure smooth realignment.

Step 8: Using your T-50 Torx bit, secure the six bolts back under the rear glass of the hardtop. There are three bolts on the driver’s side, and three on the passenger’s side.

Step 9:Using your T-50 Torx bit, secure the two bolts on top of the B-pillars. One bolt goes on the driver’s side B-pillar, and one on the passenger’s side B-pillar.

Step 10: Connect the wiring harness back to the top until it clicks and slide the red tab up. Reconnect the rear windshield washer chord back to the top.

Step 11: Reconnect the freedom panels by installing the passenger’s side panel first. Align the panel with the corresponding L shaped locks and lever and fasten them. Your sun visor must be down in order to fasten the front lever. Upon completion, do the same thing for the driver’s side. Your hardtop is now completely secured and you are ready to hit the road!
