Things You and Your Pooch Should Do This Season
The days are getting shorter and the weather is turning brisk, but there’s plenty of outdoor fun you and your four-legged friend can enjoy together. Take a look these pet-friendly fall activities!
Take a Hike
With the cooler weather, now’s the perfect time to head outdoors to hit a pet-friendly walking trail with your dog. They’ll find plenty of interesting new aromas as the leaves fall, and it’s easy to improvise a game of fetch with all the branches a wooded trail has to offer.
Pick What’s in Season
With the arrival of fall, apples are now ripe and ready to be picked, and some nearby orchards will soon allow guests to come and pick their own fruit. There are several apple orchards in Virginia that welcome pets, so once you’ve found a convenient farm nearby, you can bring your furry companion along for a day of apple picking. The same goes for pumpkin patches, so whether you plan to bake a pie, roast some seeds, or carve out a Jack O’ Lantern, there’s no reason to leave your buddy behind for the day while you pick the perfect pumpkin.
Share the Harvest
When you get home with your apples, cut out a slice, make sure it’s free of core pieces and seeds, then see if your dog would like a bite. The reward for their farm-to-bowl dining will be fresh breath and a cleaner smile. They can even have a taste of the unseasoned pumpkin puree if you’re making pie. Pumpkin in high in fiber, and just a bit – no more than a tablespoon or two depending on their size – can be added to their regular food for a nutritious treat.
Hit the Road
With schools back in session and the cooler weather sending everyone back indoors, it becomes a little easier to head out for a quick vacation or day trip. If your dog is the adventurous type, consider looking into some dog-friendly destinations and spend some time traveling together.
