Drivers often gravitate to the subcompact SUV segment on the promise of convenience and efficiency, but your vehicle should offer so much more than those essential qualities. While you naturally want a vehicle that makes the daily drive easy and enjoyable, it pays to find an SUV that’s suited to all your interests, whether that means heading into town or venturing off the roadways altogether. The Jeep Renegade and Toyota C-HR both garner attention within their class for some standout features, so let’s compare their 2019 models to see which is fit for you.

Interior Space and Quality

The Renegade’s profile closely resembles the boxy frames that Jeep has always favored, and this design allows for a particularly airy cabin for a member of the subcompact class. You and your passengers might be surprised by the substantial amount of legroom across both rows, and the overhead airspace allows even your taller crew members to ride in comfort. The seating also offers enduring support for up to five people, ensuring that no one will grow sore if the ride goes long. The C-HR is notably less accommodating, especially in the confines of its rear seats. The subcompact’s low roofline also cuts into overhead clearance, making the ride less comfortable for adult passengers. When you need to carry cargo, you can fold the Renegade’s back row for up to 50.8 cubic feet. The C-HR trials the Jeep with a 36.4-cubic-foot storage capacity.

Performance

Both of the Renegade’s engine options outperform the C-HR’s underwhelming powertrain. Jeep equips their SUV with a 180-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, while a 177-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder is also available for more torque. The C-HR falls behind with a sole 144-horsepower 4-cylinder that strains to accelerate when you need the extra speed. The Renegade is also capable of heading off-road with renowned Jeep traction and durability, whereas the C-HR is relegated to the pavement. When equipped for the work, the Renegade can tow up to 2,000 pounds. On the other hand, the C-HR is not expected to handle any towing duties.
